Peter Grippe

Artist statement:

Peter Grippe (1912-2002), Buffalo, NY, native, studied at the Albright-Knox Art School and with Edwin Dickenson at the Art Institute of Buffalo; he was on the Federal Arts Project in New York City. A member of the American Abstract Artists group, he attended Atelier 17 from 1940 to 1948 and served as director from 1951 to 1954. In the summer of 1948 he taught sculpture at Black Mountain College and later taught at Pratt Institute and Smith College. He was the first professor of sculpture and graphics at Brandeis University. His work is in museums throughout the country including the Allentown Art Museum.
