Here we have a commencement address given by Paul Hawken (environmentalis/author) to the Class of 2009 at the University of Portland. How would you react if this was for you? Take five minutes to read this, I believe it will be well worth your time. Some of the content is a bit “wishy washy”, but the environmental movement message is there.
Nice
I hope that young people are tired of the emphasis on material “success”, which my generation seems to be so focused on…there’s a whole lot more to live for
I read the speech and it gave me chills. I think that one of the most important points he makes is that the most unrealistic individual is the one that is pessimistic and that hope only makes sense where there is no room for it, when the things that we are hopeful for are not feasible. You cannot have hope without hopeless circumstances. I think that moving forward, whether as an environmentalist, human rights activist, engineer, human being, that this is a challenge that, regardless of whether it is expected of us, we should take on.
