Visual Design Resources

Many thanks to Laura M., a blogger and writing tutor from the University Center for Writing Based Learning at DePaul University for identifying several of these fantastic resources.

  • The Lost Principles of Design. By Chad Engle of the website Fuel Your Creativity.
  • Color in Motion. A fabulous interactive tutorial designed multimedia developer and graphic designer Claudia Cortes.
  • How to Use a Color Wheel. A very nice explanation of complementary, analogous, and triad colors by art dealers Dimensions through Art.
  • COLOURlovers describe itself as “an international creative community that helps people discover their inner designer.” Here you’ll find nearly 10 million individual color palettes.
  • Want to find a font that’s not the same-old-same old? Check out Operated and Managed by Riley Cran (and originally co-founded with Tyler Galpin), check out the Lost Type Co-Op, a pay-what-you-want typeface “foundry” created “is the first of its kind, a Pay-What-You-Want type foundry.
  • Data visualization is an important topic of its own, but one that I’m currently learning about myself. The Data Driven Documents site D3js.com is a leading authority on the subject.
