My second research project applies these insights to a consideration of settlers of Arizona. I am exploring parallels between Algerian settler-colonial mentalities, and the “pioneer” ethos of the American West. To this end, I have conducted research among descendants of early Mormon families in Arizona, and in public history-making that celebrates the pioneer heritage. Ongoing research carries this into eastern U.S. locations as well.
