We were lucky to be included in a tour of the Church of Saint Sebastian, a gorgeous and historic church in Venice’s main city.
Several artists, including Titian, Scarpagianino, and Paolo Veronese, decorate this church with frescos that line the walls and paintings on panels and cover the ceiling. We could ascend through the church walls to an elevated platform for prayer, hidden from the main pews. This space revealed even more sculptures, frescos, and wooden prayer benches.
Much of the church has been conserved by Save Venice and one smaller section is still covered in scaffolding. Two main rooms flank the altarpiece and provide tombs for important church patrons. The leftmost of these tombs has a tiled floor that is still being worked and we were unfortunately unable to see that progress.
