We oversaw the transport and reinstallation of “Virgin in Prayer” by Giulia Lama, a 17th and 18th-century female painter, to its home in the Chiesa Santa Maria Assunta. This church sits in the center of Malamocco, a small village on the Lido di Venezia, an island about 20 minutes from the city by boat.
The white facade of the church is flanked by little gardens and a historic bell tower, all off of the central piazza.
The painting was transported by boat to the island and carried by hand to the church. The protective transportation layers were removed to reveal the fully conserved and vibrant painting. A small frame was also tacked to the stretcher edge of the painting before installation on the wall.
After some temporary scaffolding went up, hangers and supports were installed in the wall, on which the painting would rest.
After much back and forth with the exact positioning of the painting on the wall, it was installed. The head of the church and many townspeople who also watched the installation were pleased.
