Carson McCullers sat small as a bird, much like a sandpiper with its thinness of legs, in a chair next to the fireplace…she spoke in a small tremulous voice that nevertheless mirrored an inner hardness and a strong willed mind. Her only movements were to shift the position of her legs, to light a filter cigarette, or to take a sip from a small silver cup by her side.
