Dr. Serio graduated from Lehigh University in 1991 with a BS Molecular Biology. She claims this is where her true passion for research began. She was admitted into a highly competitive pre-dental program that funneled directly into dental school. Although she had a clear path set in front of her already, she decided to pursue her research interests instead.

After first being exposed to prions in an undergraduate lab, she felt as if she had found the missing link between scientific research and science fiction. Prions were part of a mystical realm of biology that enticed her in ways that she had not been before. Not only did she graduate with departmental honors, but she completed her BS in only three years.

She pursued graduate degrees from Yale University, earning an Masters and PhD in Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry. Her dissertation focused on “Regulation of Late Gene Expression in Epstein-Barr Virus.” She completed her post-doc at the University of Chicago in Molecular Genetics and Cell Biology.

Along with numerous publications, she is the proud mother of two children and the wife of a fellow scientist. While teaching at Brown University, she was the director of their Molecular Biology, Cell Biology, and Biochemistry program. She is focused on creating well-rounded students along with pursuing high level academic research. She is a role model to all undergraduates, showing that with hard work, dedication, and truly pursuing your interests anything is possible. Although she could have followed the pre-beaten path and continued to dental school, she took a chance by electing to apply to other programs and wound up where she is today!
