Dr. Rebecca T. Barnes

Seminar: “Carbon and Nitrogen Export in Fresh Water”

Visiting Assistant Professor, Bard Center for Environmental Policy

Education: Dr. Barnes began her education at Oberlin College, achieving a B.A. in Geology and Environmental Studies and was awarded the Wharton Prize in Geology. Dr. Barnes then went on to Indian University School of Public and Environmental Affairs and earned both an M.S. in Environmental Sciences and Water Resources and an M.P.A. in Environmental Policy and Natural Resource Management. During her time at Indiana University, Dr. Barnes explored the role of state regulations in the production, transport and disposal of hazardous materials as well as the role of natural hydrocarbons on tropospheric ozone formation. Dr. Barnes then traveled to Yale and earned an M. Phil in Forestry and Environmental Studies and a Ph. D in Forestry and Environmental Studies. At Yale Dr. Barnes conducted research centered on the measurement and quantification of nutrient loads and isotopic composition of nitrate used to apportion atmospheric and sewage nitrogen sources. While at Yale, Dr. Barnes was awarded the EPA Science to Achieve Results Fellowship and the NOAA National Estuarine Research Reserve Graduate Research Fellowship both for her project, “Managing nutrients in two New England estuaries: The feasibility of using stable isotopes to monitor nitrate sources”.

Current Work: Rebecca T. Barnes currently teaches environmental science courses at the Bard Center for Environmental Policy. The center is devoted to creating leaders who understand the complexities of environmental problems and are capable of creating informed policy decision. The centers prides itself on providing an interdisciplinary education which incorporates rigorous science, economic, legal and political training. The program includes a 4-6 month internship that gives students hands-on experience, an enormous asset in the job market.
