Click here to watch and listen to Dr. Fahmy’s presentation entitled “Tiny Solutions to Big Problems: Seeing and Controlling Immunity with Nanotechnology” which was given at Lafayette College on October 1st, 2010.
Question and Answer with Dr. Fahmy:
In your opinion, what are the up and coming areas of science?
- “Broadly speaking, nanotechnology has been getting a lot of attention. Climate change is also another big area, but there is a need to connect the research. Finally, biology has been expanding rapidly due to the vast amounts of information being generated. In particular, environmental proteomics and bioinformatics are very interesting fields.
Why did you choose this field of study?
- “Inherently, my research is interdisciplinary in nature and that is a hot area to be in right now. It keeps a good conversation going between different types of scientists and presents new, interesting research questions.”
What is the biggest difficulty with your research?
- “Time. There isn’t enough in the day.”
What is your favorite thing about your research?
- “I love that you learn something each day whether its a new challenge or another question to answer.”
What is your favorite or most surprising thing about Lafayette?
- “I was very surprised to learn that Lafayette is a D1 school despite being so small.”
During lunch with Dr. Fahmy, he made the very interesting suggestion that Lafayette students should all try to take a semester off. The purpose of this semester would not necessarily be to go abroad, but to visit another college or university so as to better understand the privileges and advantages that Lafayette offers.
