Dr. Tara Alvarez received her PhD in Biomedical Engineering from Rutgers University
under the direction of Dr. John Semmlow studying the neural control of vergence. She founded the Vision and Neural Engineering Laboratory (VNEL) at the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) in 2001 as an Assistant Professor. The VNEL laboratory is funded through the National Science Foundation and the National Institutes of Health, National Eye Institute. Her primary area of expertise is to utilize various modalities of eye movement, clinical and brain mapping technologies to better understand neuroplasticity of the visual system. Currently, she is a Professor and Director of the Biomedical Engineering Undergraduate Program within the Department of Biomedical Engineering at NJIT.

Dr. Alvarez presented her findings on her published paper Functional Mechanisms of Neural Control in Convergence Insufficiency.
