Coding Mainstream Media, ABC

CodingABC

Snapshot of included PDF, coding a sample of “Students at more than 50 schools, universities stage reproductive justice protests”

This sample represents my first application of my selected frames to news coverage of post-Roe protests. Abode Acrobat was extremely helpful in highlighting information and adding additional textboxes. This dual-function allowed me to point out two different frames on the same piece of information. For example, the purple highlight makes note of the overall tone. The final blue textbox utilizes a thematic frame to connect an individual protest to a larger movement, therefore showing a positive tone of democracy and activism.

ABC was very diligent in preserving activist quotes and giving them space to establish their narrative. Demands were also directly from these activists as they called on both their country and their schools to take action. Conflict framing was minimal. The closest quote from authority came from an excerpt of the law that triggered protests in South Dakota.

AllSides Media Bias of ABC News

One benefit of using national news sources is AllSides to measure bias and reliability. The tone of the article and positive-emotional appeal given to activists fits with AllSides designation of ABC as “Lean Left.”
