Case Study 2: Binghamton University

Located in upstate NY, Binghamton University is generally referred to as the top public college in the state. The school houses roughly 14k undergraduate students and 4k grad students. Their student newspaper is the “Pipe Dream”.  Founded in 1946, it is published independently and entirely run by undergraduate students. Issues drop on Mondays and Thursdays but breaking news can be published at any time.

When looking for a school to serve as Lafayette’s foil, I was surprised to see so much coverage from Binghamton. Not only did the paper cover a student-run protest, multiple other articles were published about on and off-campus activism.

I chose the article that covered a student-organized protest directly organized by a campus organization and located on the university grounds.

Pipe Dream excerpt

Seen above is just one piece of the article. The blue represents the thematic framing. These sections emphasize activist-voices selected for quotes, connections to other movements, and even visual media like protest signs. The purple shows a neutral tone of dissemination as rally facts are provided in a straight-forward manner. Lastly, the pink calls on the Social Responsibility Frame.  The organizer of the event is quoted in her discussion about who should care and who should be leading talks on the issue of abortion. These three frames were most common in the article, especially Social Responsibility.

This article did not seem to fall into any of the pitfalls associated with the Protest Paradigm.
