After the lecture last night on the 1783 eruption of Lakigigur (the second largest in Iceland), we had high hopes for great views during the long drive into the interior. We thought that we would be disappointed on the hike up as we literally walked into the clouds. However, as we approached the summit, the clouds lifted and we were able to see the full length of the 27 km long fissure. Winds were still daunting…probably approaching 40mph and the summit! We followed the longer hike with a short one that allowed us peer into the a couple of the spatter cones and then of course a beautiful waterfall. The hotel tonight is Scandinavian design with an amazing buffet dinner.
