CHARLEMAGNE AND ALCUIN
This stained glass panel is located in a first-floor study room in Skillman Library.
• 4-separtate panels
• Reading an astronomy book in Palatine Chapel
Charlemagne starting Palatine school in Aachen, Germany
• Alcuin led revival of learning known as the “Carolingian Renaissance”
• Inscription: “To the glory of God and in honor of Ario Pardee and William Cassidy Cattell; of whom one donated and the other build this structure”
• Connection to Tiffany company through Lafayette families
Daughter of James Hall Mason Knox (president from 1883-1890) married Louis             Comfort Tiffany
• Originally placed in the Auditorium window of Pardee Hall
Pardee had donated $20,000 to build Pardee Hall and start the Pardee Scientific        Program – essentially the advent of the College’s engineering department
Installed in 1899
• The College thought that it was lost in the fire
Fire in Colton Chapel in 1965 destroyed two other Tiffany windows
This was found in 1990 in storage when alumni interested in renovation
• The College preserved and treated them to put them in the library
This would increase accessibility and publicity to it, and prevent it from being destroyed in storage
Completely dismantled and cleaned by Diane Shaw (current archives Director) and an alumni (E. Crosby Willet)

THE DEATH OF SIR PHILLIP SIDNEY, 1899
This stained glass panel is located in the Rothkopf Reading Room in Skillman library. It consists of a central pictorial panel and tow flanking windows, each containing two decorative panels. Here are some facts about the stained glass:

• Tiffany Glass & Decorating company made the window
• Made for the Van Wickle Memorial Library – Van Wickle hall used to be the library before it was the geology building, as we know it today
Note: this is why there are carvings of books at the top of the cornice on the exterior
Moved to the library in 2001
• Sir Phillip Sidney – poet and one of Queen Elizabeth’s favorite courtiers
Work was admired in the late 19th century
Combined traits of a poet with those of a warrior – he himself was the perfect embodiment, or symbol, of thought and action combined

Central Panel
The central panel from this stained glass image can be found on the first floor of Skillman library in the reading room.
• Sir Philip depicted on battlefield in Zutphen, Netherlands
Gone there to aid uncle in capturing the city from the Spanish during the Dutch wars for independence
Sir Philip offer drink to fallen soldier saying “Thy necessity is yet greater than mine”
• The image combined with its intent to serve as a memory to Augustus Van Wickle who funded the building suggests “the knightly character and generous thoughtfulness of him whose memory the window is erected”.

Flanking Windows
The two windows that originally flanked the central piece can be found in the Rothkopf Reading Room on the second floor of Skillman library.
• Upper panel on each flanking segment feature an owl
o Symbol of wisdom and battle
o Associated with sleep and death
o The owl emphasizes the memorial function of the narrative window
• Lower panel of right-side window depicts Elizabethan era royal coat of arms
o References to the Sidney family included
