What I liked about this presentation is that it did a good job in showing how the context of the time shaped the common ideas of an all-women’s bar. Obviously, there was still rampant discrimination and oppression of women throughout much of this time period, and the context of having America’s struggle with the civil war and racial equality being juxtaposed with the struggle for women’s suffrage was a good comparison. In addition, I enjoyed the propaganda film about the weightlifter who found his wife reading a book about women’s suffrage. The clip was originally from a video game about the decline of the wild west that took place in 1911, so it makes perfect sense that the women portrayed in the clip apparently had trouble with tasks such as construction work, which were seen as male-dominated. I did not know that there were female-only bars in the early 1900’s before watching this, and it was interesting to see that women were banned from bars up until a certain point because society believed it was a taboo for them to take part in the bar culture. One piece of constructive criticism is that the some of the slides weren’t twenty seconds long, which resulted in the slidecast being a bit short, but this is more of a minor, detail. Another such detail is the audio quality. I noticed some background noise at times, but again, it isn’t of much concern since the presentation was very well-executed.

The presentation did a good job of showing the discrimination and oppression of the American woman during this time period. The comparison of the women’s suffrage movement and how it took back seat slavery until after the civil war was interesting. I was not aware of this fact before watching the presentation. One thing that you may have mentioned was that World War I would prove to be a turning point for women. Before the war, women had no socio-economic power at all. By the end of the war, women had proved that they were just as important to the war effort as men had been. They had helped prove there equality thus deserving the same rights as men to vote.
The images of women’s only bar with smoking, drinking and abandoning of children, may have been a bit exaggerated, but the public drinking and smoking did eventually happen. With the passing of the nineteenth amendment women began using the cigarette and smoking in public as a symbol of equality. The short video depicting the weight lifters wife reading the book about women’s suffrage was entertaining and depicted the mindset of society in the early 1900s.
If I had to criticize anything with the presentation it would be that some of the slides were less than 20 seconds. That being said, to me it is probably better than having periods of silence at the end of each slide. The narration was clear and informative. Overall I thought the presentation was very well executed.

This slide cast was done very nicely. It flowed easily relating Women’s rights, women’s suffrage and what was expected of them into one coherent presentation. One aspect of it that I found particularly interesting was the connection between women’s suffrage and the vices, drinking and smoking. Also it’s pretty bizarre that men believed that if women were given the right to vote, they would eventually take over the world, and man’s place in society would be below women. But I guess it makes sense, because they needed some crazy ideas to justify the repression of women’s rights. I really liked how Marissa worked the video clip into the presentation. The content worked nicely and it fit as a single 20-second slide. My only criticism of the presentation is, as has been expressed, about the audio quality. I think the recording could’ve been a little sharper, but this is not a big deal considering the content of the presentation was very good. Well Done.

This was a great presentation that portrayed the discrimination and oppression that women faced during this time very well. I wasn’t that familiar with most of the things you talked about, so I learned a lot. I hate how you asked questions during the presentation. The short video fit into the presentation very well and was a nice change from seeing just pictures. One thing that stood out to me was that the nature of the presentation wasn’t about a future vision with a specific machine. Also, as expected, you brought up important ideas we discussed in class, like progress, as well as John D. Rockefeller and JP Morgan. The only problem was, as mentioned in the previous comments, it was a little hard at times to hear what you were saying due to the audio quality, which created a distraction from what you were saying. Overall, it didn’t take that much away from the presentation.

I really enjoy listening to this presentation, I think that it’s a very interesting application of what we learned in a History of Technology course, applied to a social issue. I guess it makes sense in a loose sense when taking into consideration that the history of technology is a social system. I thought that the pictures chosen were very well placed in the presentation. I think that the most interesting thing that I took from the slide-cast was the underlying idea that like predictions of the future of technology, the future of society is limited by the same factors that hold back its technological counterpart. Many of the ambitions of women were highlighted by the idea of Women’s suffrage. While an important issue in society, it’s interesting to see how it seems to have blinded people through history into thinking that progress for women means the female taking on a more masculine role. By linking the idea of suffrage with men, the future seemed to women at the time to be a replacement of the male role in society. I found your presentation of the material to be satirical at times, and I think this was a a proper way of presenting it, because today it’s easy to see where their predictions a hundred years ago were wrong. Overall a good project, If I could suggest anything I think it would be to focus more on the history of technology, but in questioning the history of “progress” I think you did a great job.

I enjoyed that you used this image to show what people of the era worried about. I also liked that you highlighted the dichotomy between men and women in a social world. I also could not help but notice that the image shown at about 3:20 with the chaotic city looked like pictures of India and other developing nations today. I know this was not what your presentation was on but I still could not help but notice. I also really liked the video put in and its helpfulness in forwarding your argument. I think another slide describing the picture of Mrs. P.J. Gilligan’s Saloon would be overall interesting, although not completely necessary since you touched on many other things. Although your presentation was a shorter than the 20 seconds per slide, I thought the way you were able to pull together several slides at once kept the presentation flowing and interesting. Overall, I thought it was very thorough discussion on the progress of women’s suffrage.

I found this slidecast to be very interesting and enlightening. You did an excellent job describing the image and the meanings of its various aspects. The information you presented about the context of the time was very detailed, and was helpful in my understanding of the image. It is also evident that you did a lot of research into the background and historical context of the women’s suffrage movement. I thought the audio content was great and you talked at a pace that was easy to understand. There was a good flow between each slide, and I liked that you included the video. It was also interesting to see how far off and ridiculous the prediction turned out to be. Overall I thought you did a great job.

I really enjoyed this presentation. I think that the topic you chose was a really great one. you spoke very clearly and the pictures that you chose went along really well with your presentation. Each description for your images was very informative and interesting. I also think that your presentation flowed very well with no awkward times in between, which is definitely very tricky to do for these presentations. Overall, i really enjoyed watching it and thought it was a very well thought out topic which was presented really well.
