Lectures in the morning followed by our first visit to the summit region of Kilauea volcano. Tour and talk about the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory by Frank Trusdell (expert on Mauna Loa volcanism), hike through 1982 lava flows ans lava trees and the Puu Pui devastation trail. Picnic dinner at the Visitor’s Center and a talk on the 2011 activity of the Pu’u O’o eruption by USGS scientist Tim Orr.
