As I watch the images of devastation, poverty, fear, and sorrow flash before me on the CNN website, I feel the helplessness of the people. I wonder what can I do? I read the postings on Facebook about donations as easy as a click of my mouse. I think back to our response to Katrina. The truckloads of donations, the checks and dollars, and concerns triggered by feelings of compassion and caring.
My mind takes me to my ASB trip to Gulfport Mississippi one year after the hurricane destroyed the communities there. It was there I witnessed all the work that still needed and still needs to be done many years later.
So I was thinking about how those of us here at Lafayette could develop a more sustainable response to the people of Haiti, and I remembered reading about Fr. Tom Hagan and his organization Hands Together, which began here at Lafayette. What a wonderful partnership that could be, especially since one of our alums, Doug Campbell, is the director.
