Speed Mac Boot up

I’ve been having REALLLLY slow start up times w/ my macbook pro – sometimes the little ticker would spin 50 cycles before I get to my login window – it felt like several minutes would pass, and I grew more worried and impatient every time.

While I usually do a clean install every few years, I really didn’t want to go to the trouble – everything else checked out ok w/ my routine maintenance procedures. But a quick search found that duplicate fonts could be the issue – and after completing the following – boot speeds are back where they should be. This is non-invasive and easy to do – give it a try!

Open “Font Book” in your Apps folder, wait for the ‘All’ list to populate. If you see font names with a black bullet point to the right, that is a duplicate font. At this point you can click any font name in the list, then ‘select all’ fonts, then select ‘resolve duplicates’ from the edit menu. This repair happens very quickly. Log-out or restart, and you will have your mac back to (almost) new again!

Windows 7

Some readers might notice that my banner graphic is a snag of a built in Windows7 theme. Never thought I’d say this: (and it’s subject to change) I don’t mind 7 at all – er, so far. Of course, I’m running it on a bootcamp’d mac so my experience may be more pleasant because of the superior hardware/display.

Unexpectedly, I’m actually looking forward to working with Win7. Nice to know… pigs CAN fly.
