What makes a park accessible?
When researching handicapped-accessible parks and forests, it is first necessary to establish what qualities, services, and facilities make a park accessible. Through in-depth research of current state and national parks, we have compiled a list of resources that should be present at every park to improve accessibility. In other words, you’re in the right place if you see:
- Wheelchair accessible shuttles to, from, and within park/forest grounds
- Designated wheelchair parking areas
- Designated handicapped parking areas
- Wheelchair accessible boardwalks, paths, and trails
- Rentable adaptive technology vehicles such as:
- All-terrain wheelchairs
- Sand wheelchairs
- Monoskis
- Adaptive prosthetic attachments
- Ramps into, inside, and around buildings and facilities
- Accessibility guides
