What makes a park accessible?

When researching handicapped-accessible parks and forests, it is first necessary to establish what qualities, services, and facilities make a park accessible. Through in-depth research of current state and national parks, we have compiled a list of resources that should be present at every park to improve accessibility. In other words, you’re in the right place if you see:

  • Wheelchair accessible shuttles to, from, and within park/forest grounds
  • Designated wheelchair parking areas
  • Designated handicapped parking areas
  • Wheelchair accessible boardwalks, paths, and trails
  • Rentable adaptive technology vehicles such as:
    • All-terrain wheelchairs
    • Sand wheelchairs
    • Monoskis
    • Adaptive prosthetic attachments
  • Ramps into, inside, and around buildings and facilities
  • Accessibility guides
