Emma Watson recently gave a speech at the UN regarding a new initiative called HeForShe. She brings to attention the many misconceptions behind feminism and how it is all too often associated with  “man-hating.” She speaks to how feminism is by definition “the belief that men and women should have equal rights and opportunities. It is the theory of the political, economic and social equality of the sexes.”

She makes some great points regarding gender equality for both women and men. Theres a 15min video, which I think is definitely worth the time to watch, and the article nicely summarizes her speech.

  1. I was actually just about to post this! Dang it Reese beating me to it. I’m a huge Harry Potter fan so I’m allll about this. Emma Watson using her amazing stardom for a great cause? What could be better? Spolier alert, its not.

One of Watson’s first lines is, “The more I’ve spoken about feminism, the more I’ve realized is that fighting for woman’s rights is too often synonymous with man hating. If there is one thing I know for certain, it is that this has to stop.” Which I find very powerful. As we talked about on the first day, feminism sometimes gets this bra burning dyke reputation–which I hope we all know at this point in the semester is not true–but some people still don’t know this. As Reese described above, Watson discusses this idea through her speech– its very well done and definitely worth the watch.

  2. The video has been gaining popularity within the past few days. It’s great that such a big star like Emma Watson is speaking on a topic about feminism and gender equality.

  3. An article I came across in response to the Emma Watson’s speech. It talks about the recent string of celebrity nude photos with regard to how women are not safe on the internet because of the constant threat of having their privacy violated and exploited solely beacuse some creep on the internet decides consent doesn’t matter.

“From Emma Watson’s nude threat to abusive YouTube comments: why women aren’t safe on the internet ” —
