An X-Citing New Trailer
Hold on tight, X-Men fans. This is a big one.
On Monday, Fox released their latest trailer for X-Men: Days of Future Past. Check it out:
WOW. How about that? I have to say, I’m pretty excited. I’ve been off-and-on with the X-Universe for a while (X-Men and X2? Great! X3? Not so much. X-Men Origins: Wolverine? ….I prefer to pretend that one never happened), but X-Men: First Class and the most recent Wolverine have gained my trust back… at least for the moment. After this trailer? I’m still on board. It looks fast, intense, action-packed, and just generally SUPER, with the X-Men using more of their powers than I think we typically see from them. Not to mention the sheer number of characters on the screen, something that could be awesome, (Michael Fassbender, James McAvoy, Ian McKellan and Patrick Stewart all on screen together? YES PLEASE) or cause Spider-Man 3 levels of confusion and disappointment.
With Bryan Singer back at the helm, I’ll keep my hopes up, and will definitely be seeing X-Men: Days of Future Past when it releases at the end of May.
Fox Reserves Release Dates
Big movie studios like Disney, Warner Brothers, and Fox often reserve movie release dates a year or two in advance, but recently they’ve been scheduling movies up to 8 years in advance. Disney, in particular, has its movie release dates scheduled through 2021, when The Avengers 3 is set to debut.
Recently, Fox has been amping up its superhero presence, rekindling the X-Men franchise and rebooting The Fantastic Four. Because of this, they recently released their superhero schedule for the next few years, including:
- X-Men: Apocalypse– May 27, 2016
- Wolverine 2- March 3, 2017
- Fantastic Four 2– July 14, 2017
- Untitled Film- July 13, 2018
These join The Fantastic Four, opening in 2015, and X-Men: Days of Future Past, opening this summer. The one generating the most buzz is, unsurprisingly, the untitled one, as it leaves open a myriad of possibilities. My bet would be on another X-Men movie of some sort, whether it be a group film, solo flick (possibly Magneto?)… or a crossover attempt with the Fantastic Four, something Fox has been hinting at for a while.
What do you think this mystery Marvel film could be? Fox only owns these two big properties, so what mystery could they be planning?
“Age of Ultron” Sneak Peek!
This past Tuesday saw the premiere of Marvel’s “Avengers Assemble: Building a Universe” special on ABC, debuting a slew of new information and concept art for their next few films. Most notably, from the group were three pictures: one featuring the “Hulkbuster” Iron Man suit, one of each of Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver, the newest additions to the team. Check them out below!

I’m excited about these designs; Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch both look realistic and functional, and they stand out from the rest of the clean-cut Avengers. Having been described by Joss Whedon (writer/director) as “Eurotrash,” I think the costume designs fit the characters. The biggest remaining concern is if their powers will sufficiently “mesh” with the rest of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, or if the addition of magic (otherwise referred to as “The Age of Miracles”) will be too much for audiences to handle.
Fantastic Four Reboot: On the Right Path?
Back in 2005, Fox produced a Fantastic Four movie that was simultaneously a superhero flick and an attempt at a parody of a superhero flick. It spawned an overall disappointing sequel (Rise of the Silver Surfer), and since then the property has remained untouched. Recently, Fox has unearthed those properties (probably because they’re about to lose the rights back to Marvel studios), and have decided to give it another go– hopefully something a little better than last time. The Fantastic Four have the unique quality of being a family team, as well as slightly older than the average group of superheroes. This film could have been the perfect opportunity for pulling in older viewers.
Unfortunately, that doesn’t seem to be how Fox (who has been hinting at an X-men/Fantastic Four crossover film if the latter is successful) is thinking with their casting and plot synopsis. Let’s start with the synopsis. A report at acting-auditions.org states:
“The Fantastic Four’ will tell the story of two very young friends, Reed Richards and Ben Grimm. After an event transforms the boys, they find themselves empowered with bizarre new abilities. Reed becomes a scientific genius who can stretch, twist and re-shape his body to inhuman proportions. Ben becomes a monstrous, craggy humanoid with orange, rock-like skin and super strength. However, the two end up being owned by the government and used as weapons. But after they mature, two others with powers come into the picture – Sue Storm “The Invisible Girl” and Johnny Storm “The Human Torch.”
This deviates wildly from the original story of the Fantastic Four, where the Reed, Sue, Johnny, and Ben are astronauts on the same mission who get radiation poisoning. I know it’s enough to make me nervous about the movie, as straying so far from the source material often makes me question why they don’t just create an original story with original characters.
Fox has also released casting news, listing Miles Teller as Reed Richards, Cate Mara as Sue Storm, Michael B. Jordan as Johnny Storm, and Jaime Bell as Ben Grimm. There are a lot of interesting choices within this list, some causing a lot of controversy (and outright racism) within the larger moviegoing community, as Michael B. Jordan is playing a character who is typically drawn as white in the comic books.

This isn’t the first time something like this has happened– Samuel L. Jackson’s character Nick Fury was originally white, and his casting (even though it happened before the true explosion of comic book movies into the mainstream) caused a similar controversy within the comic book community. Now, everyone loves him; they’ve even based the character off of him in the Ultimate comic books.
Personally, I’m fine with Michael B. Jordan playing Johnny Storm; I’ll see the movie if the trailer looks any good. What worries me more is the skewing of the cast towards the younger side, as well as the major plot renovations. I’d rather they be true to the personality of the comic than the actual aesthetic or race of any individual character, especially when someone as talented as Michael B. Jordan is being considered the “problem.”
“The Flash”- New On-Set Photos
Arrow season two introduced the audience to Barry Allen, otherwise known as “The Flash,” in preparation for the superhero to get his own TV show. A couple weeks ago, we got our first image of the new costume, set to be worn by Grant Gustin as he stars in the CW show. Now, set images from the actual shoot have started surfacing on the web.
So far, I’m not in love with the costume from the front. The helmet looks like it has antennas, and since Ant-man is also dressed in red, that’s the first thing I jump to. And as someone who happens to be a track runner, the outfit looks both too hot and too stiff to run in comfortably. But maybe I’m being picky. Take a look for yourself below:
And check out more set photos here. The Flash is set to premiere later this year on the CW.
Interview– Can Girls Like Comics Too?
Female fans of comic book movies have been under pressure for a long time; there’s yet to be a (serious) female solo film from any of the major movie houses, despite the fact that 40% of megablockbuster The Avengers‘ audience was female. If they do get their own films, they are disrespected or oversexualised, bogged down with bad plots and worse writing. Yet despite these facts, female fans do exist, holding out hope for a comic book adaptation that doesn’t demean their onscreen idols, but rather holds them up to the same standards that men are held to.

I interviewed a close friend, superhero lover, and feminist, Jordan, about these very topics. Jordan was immersed in comic books by her father at a young age and grew up watching DC cartoons, including Teen Titans and Justice League. Recently, however, she’s turned her favor towards Marvel. “They have more interesting stories; more complex characters, especially women. So far, DC has a lot of angst– a lot of men whose parents die and they have to come back for justice… DC does television better, but Oliver Queen” (Arrow) “is basically another Bruce Wayne.”
Be that as it may, isn’t DC home to one of the most iconic female characters of all time: Wonder Woman?
Jordan agrees: Wonder Woman is a great character, and with Gal Gadot set to play her in the upcoming Batman vs. Superman film due out in 2015, will probably be a big hit. “Still,” she says, “she’s not the main focus; she’s a side character. The movie is called Batman vs. Superman, even though no one really cares about Superman… Take him out and put in more Wonder Woman!”
That’s not the only female superhero that Jordan thinks should make the leap to more screen time. “The X-men are full of great female characters. Wolverine now has two spinoff movies… why not give one to a character like Storm, or Rogue?” Why not, indeed? Scarlett Johansson’s turn as Black Widow in The Avengers has redefined the female superhero… and she did it without any powers. What could a fully-powered heroine do to the silver screen?
Still, these movies are only dreams stuck “in development” for the moment. We may be on the brink of a turn, but we have yet to reach it. In the meantime, what adaptations would Jordan recommend for the near future?
“Definitely Guardians of the Galaxy. It could be a huge flop, but it could also be great. It’s new and so different from what Marvel’s been putting out lately.”
And, for the record, it has a female villain.
DC TV Roundup
The past week has seen some exciting news for the DC Universe currently planned for television. Two major announcements have been made this past week, one about the CW’s spinoff of Arrow revolving around The Flash, and the other concerning the future production currently titled “Gotham.”
The Flash
On Friday, DC released the first image of the Flash’s costume for his upcoming TV show (starring Grant Gustin in the title role). Notably, the costume has a red color slightly muted from the comics, and the lightning bolts are flat to the helmet, rather than sticking out (a nice touch of realism– having them stick out makes it way too easy for supervillains to grab your helmet). Take a look:
Gotham
The new DC endeavor doesn’t have a lot of information beyond a concept at this point, but there has been some new casting news. Bruce Wayne and Selina Kyle (later known as Batman and Catwoman, respectively), will be played by David Mazouz and Camren Bicondova. The actors will be playing childhood versions of their characters, as the show will be taking place around the time of Mr. and Mrs. Wayne’s death– long before Bruce Wayne dons the cape and cowl.
Marvel One-Shot Hints at Future
This past week, Thor: The Dark World was released on BluRay and DVD, premiering tons of new bonus content from the Marvel Universe. One such item of bonus content was the one-shot “All Hail the King,” a continuation of last year’s Iron Man 3. These short Marvel films have been included as bonus content on the DVD releases since 2011’s Thor, which premiered the light-hearted “The Consultant,” a follow-up to both The Incredible Hulk and Iron Man. Since then, four new one-shots have been released with each of the new Marvel movies, including “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Thor’s Hammer,” “Item 47” (which spawned the ABC Television show “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.”), “Agent Carter” (also rumored to have sparked a television show), and “All Hail the King.” Watch a clip from the short below:
This newest one-shot, following Iron Man 3’s hoax villain Trevor Slattery during his time in prison, is particularly interesting because of what it might mean for the future of the universe.
[Warning: SPOILERS below for those who have not seen Iron Man 3 or this newest Marvel one-shot.]
Ready? Okay.
Trevor, enjoying his celebrity status in prison, is being interviewed about his time posing as The Mandarin while in the employ of AIM. About halfway through the short, the interviewer stops to tell Trevor about the real Ten Rings terrorist group and their leader, the Mandarin King. Trevor is oblivious, but the interviewer starts to assemble a gun, revealing a tattoo of… the Ten Rings! The same terrorist group that kidnapped Tony Stark back in the first Iron Man movie. Trevor finds himself, at the end of the short, with a gun to his head being told to prepare to meet the man whose name he stole.
Does that mean that the Mandarin, the mystical, rings-wielding, archnemesis-of-Iron-Man version, actually exists in the Marvel Cinematic Universe? It looks like it. Will we meet him in a future film? That’s harder to tell. These one-shots seem to be pushing towards television shows, but I can’t imagine Ben Kingsley or Robert Downey, Jr. starring in a network television dramedy. And with RDJ’s most recent contract only keeping him around for two more Avengers movies, I’m not sure we’ll see the Mandarin on the big screen anytime soon either.
It could be that this is just an attempt from Marvel to clear what has been considered by many fanboys “the biggest wrong” the Marvel Cinematic Universe has done them. With the bait-and-switch reveal of the “fake” Mandarin, they want to know there’s a real one out there. This could just be the MCU’s attempt to leave the existence of the Mandarin up to personal interpretation, thus satisfying the fanboys and fangirls still angry that they had the wool pulled over their eyes.
What do you think? Will we ever see the “real” Mandarin on the screen? And if you haven’t, go check out Thor: The Dark World on DVD!
