The podcast I recorded is about Marion Nestle and how she has struck change in the food industry of the United States. Marion is an academic who has dedicated her life to extensive research on how food relates to health, and how the food industry is acting in its own best interest, rather than that of its consumers. She is passionate about getting education to the public on how the food industry really works, and what a healthy lifestyle should look like. Nestle implemented a food studies program at New York University, and inspired many other institutions to do the same. This podcast touches on her influence in the food industry, and includes clips of Marion talking on a podcast episode with Jack Stafford. She explains to Jack where the issues in our current food system have developed from, and what she thinks people don’t truly understand about the deceit involved when companies are marketing and selling products. Nestle also talks about the obesity problem in the current United States. Food is much more prominent and available in our lives today than it ever was before, and many people don’t have the knowledge to make healthy choices for themselves. This podcast provides an insight into the truth behind what is marketed to the public in regards to food, and gives a baseline of information to inspire people to do more research on healthy choices. Propaganda can be powerful, but with the right tools and knowledge, people can become aware of what is actually true, and see through the marketing gimmicks of companies and officials. After listening to this podcast, you will find yourself inspired to put more thought into your food choices.
Throughout this podcast I really liked how you included snippets of Nestles voice talking about her main points. I learned that America has twice as many calories in our food system than we need which makes the food system competitive. In order to make money, food businesses spend their time trying to get people to eat more overall. This just shows how screwed up the food sector is because they are all profit driven. I liked how you offered solutions to this issue like education and transparency of companies. I think that having a required nutrition course in high school could go a long way in teaching people how to nourish their bodies without some promise of making money as a return (think diet companies/brands).
Great podcast!! I had never heard of Marion Nestle before this, which is crazy because she speaks so powerfully about ideas a support and believe are true. This podcast provided me with more facts to corroborate the fact that the food system is corrupt. Her focus on education and transparency to counteract the ignorance creating system is something that resonates with me. I really liked how you integrated sound bytes of her from other podcasts- that worked great!
Good job Tate! Marion Nestle is someone who I’ve read articles by but haven’t really heard much to humanize her, which you did a good job of here. I also liked that you used a sound clip of probably the most optimistic thing she has ever said to bring a more positive light to your podcast!
You did a great job with this podcast! I found it difficult to introduce someone that most people have never heard of, but you did a wonderful job painting a broad picture of her work and her opinions. I enjoyed learning about her thoughts on how overconsumption, overproduction, and hyper-competitiveness within the food system all interact. You chose some great audio clips to include, she is a great speaker and that was an awesome addition to the podcast.
