1. I was not aware of the James Beard foundation racial and gender prejudices.
2. The intro with the music and inclusion of quotes was great as well as the inclusion of music throughout!
3. I love how you included your grandmother! I feel like she should be introduced earlier on in the podcast and maybe structure your story of Beard around an interview of her?
I really enjoyed learning about James Beard. I think this profile is interesting because it focuses a lot on the culinary aspect of food studies, whereas a lot of the other people we have studied are on the agricultural end of the spectrum. As someone who loves to cook, this showed me how we can make a difference in the food industry in our own kitchens – I especially thought it was interesting that he wrote so many cookbooks. Because Beard was a closeted gay man, I admire how he went against gender norms and showed that men can have a passion of cooking just as women can. I loved the introduction and how it blended with the music before your initial podcast began. It was also great how you included some commentary from (what sounded like) interviews/news coverage about James Beard. It was just really intriguing. I think it would have been beneficial to include your grandmother even earlier – this was such a nice addition to your podcast to gain her perspective since she remembered Beard’s influence in the 50s.
1. knew that James Beard was a celebrated figure in the restaurant industry, but I did not know he was so passionate about sustainability and organic foods in cooking. I also had not heard about the issues of prejudice within the foundation, or why they had actually cancelled the award ceremonies.
2. I thought the quotes you added throughout, especially at the beginning. They were super interesting and I liked how varied they were as well. I also liked how you talked about him as a person and his life outside of cooking.
3. I think it would’ve been good to maybe outline the structure of the podcast a bit at the beginning, or maybe mention that your grandmother will be joining you later on.
