1. Butz definitely embraced a capitalist structure for food production. He didn’t seem to have any appreciation or understanding of agriculture’s reliance on natural systems.
2. I like how you set this up as an episode in a series! It’s also really nice and engaging how it’s an interview style, rather than more of a story.
3. It could be beneficial to add in some quotes or recordings of critics of Butz (since there are probably many) just to add to your critique at the end.
1. I did not know that Earl Butz had such a large influence on agriculture such as by indirectly causing the 1980s market failure with his demands of buying and producing more.
2. The podcast is very engaging! I like how you not only interact with Butz but also with the audience.
3. When you switch from Butz’s last statement to your reflection afterwards you could benefit from transitioning with music or some other transition.
1. I did not know that he worked in the 70’s. I’m not quite sure why, but I thought he worked in the 50’s and 60’s. I think this is because I had previously connected him to the WWII/post war boom in industrial agriculture and subsequent increases in production. So it was good to have that clarified for myself. To second Rachel, I also didn’t how his policies indirectly caused/connected to the 1908s market failure.
2. I think the style, playing an interviewer while talking with Butz, was interesting and fun to listen to.
3. I would recommend providing a bit more background on Butz as a person. It could have been helpful to hear more about his childhood and background, as that tends to shape a person’s future opinions.
