Our team worked with members of the community to determine strengths and weaknesses in our beta prototype. One of the recommendations we received was to change the appearance of our prototype by designing a cover for the system. The cover would help to protect the motors, strings, housing, and pulley guides in our beta design prototype. Another suggestion was to adjust the motor controller since the motor opening the lid to the recycling bin was not rotating enough to close the lid back. This was resolved by ensuring the Raspberry Pi was connected to the correct motor encoder leads for the gear motor. These lead connections would permit the Raspberry Pi software to command the motor to close the recycling lid without any pauses or delays. We also adjusted the controller to open the trash and recycling lids at a specific angle rather than opening the lids at a random angle for an arbitrary input of time.
