Class Format

Individual class meetings will be conducted as small seminar discussions and the focus will be on your thinking about the reading represented in, e.g., your reading notes, comments in class discussions, annotated passage discussions, etc.

Please check the reading notes schedules carefully (they will be posted on Moodle) so that you know when you’re responsible for sharing your notes.

We’ll read a new novel every 2-3 weeks.

Annotated passage discussions are always due on the second class discussion of a new novel.

I will give short, interactive presentations as needed to provide context and/or to explore further issues generated in our discussions.

Often we will begin class with some small group work or informal writing  that is followed by discussion with the whole class.   I will sometimes collect that work, and  when I do I will read it carefully.  I may or may not provide individual comments, but you should save any in-class writing for possible inclusion later in your portfolios.  When you work in small groups, you should take notes so that when we reconvene as a class you have in front of you a  record of your discussion that you can then speak from.

Please bring to every class whatever texts are up for discussion (including handouts and any assigned writing); should you forget (it happens), be sure to sit next to someone with whom you can look on.  And if you notice the person next to you without a book or handout, please offer to share.
