ENG 304: Melville & Ellison

Diversity in Wonder Woman

Before attending Jill Lepore’s lecture on the history of Wonder Woman, I didn’t think it would have much to do with what we discuss in class. However after the lecture, I found many parallels between our class discussion and the history of Wonder Woman. Wonder Woman’s journey through the women’s  rights movement mirrors what we read from Ellison. Wonder Woman breaking through of the chains that were put around her and repressing her is like what we read in Ellison’s stories like “That I had the Wings” and “Flying Home”. Like the Ellison’s characters needed to break through the chains that society’s racial expectations of, women were also chained down by expectations and rules. Also the lack of the racial diversity in comics in general speaks to what we discussed in class on Friday about the lack of diversity in film. While there is a  push for further diversity in both fields, ultimately there is very little representation in both fields.

I like how you were able to tie the Wonder Woman talk to our reading of Ellison thus far. I think the comparisons are very good examples and interesting ones to point out. I also think that such is true about any art form though- that there is a part of yourself pushed onto what you create whether you are aware of it or not. It is always neat to try and figure out what it is that is being projected however.
