Narrative Essay

            What the fuck man?

What?

What do you mean what? Look at your damn hand.

Yeah it hurts, its not bleeding badly though.

Great at least you wont get light headed.

You know what, I have had quite the hour just now.

You just brought it on yourself.

Regardless of the cause it was still quite the ordeal.

Just realize it’s all your own fault.

Yeah. I know.

Why would you do something that stupid?

It didn’t seem that stupid.

Did you stop to think about it?

No.

Well that explains why it didn’t seem stupid.

AJ and Dave had been there for three days for hours doing just that.

Fucking think about it. First off, you know its just plain stupid. Second off, you were pretty damn sure before and now you’re absolutely positive its illegal. Of course the day Dave doesn’t show is the day cops come, pussy.

It’s only illegal if you get caught.

Don’t give me that. You aren’t even aloud to say that. You got caught.

I don’t know why I went with him. I wish I could say, “I don’t know why I let him talk me into it,” but there was no persuasion involved.

Do you ever think?

Occasionally

You know whose fault it really is?

The second cop.

That bitch.

The first guy was fine.

First pig I’ve met and liked.

He just pulled up to the edge of the field, got out, and waved us over.

AJ panics and folds the barrel down. “It’s not a real gun! It’s not a real gun!” Nothing is even happening and he’s freaking out.

Well to be fair no one wants to get shot.

He wasn’t even holding his hand near his gun. You could’ve run.

Yeah, and got caught.

You could out run the cop, or at least AJ.

I wasn’t going to leave AJ behind; he can’t form a complete sentence without my help.

Still, it could’ve saved you a lot of time and trouble.

No it would have been worse. I would have gotten caught, or lost or something. My car was a block away, if I ran to that he would just hop in his Charger and have me in a second.

Of course it was a goddamn Charger. A 6’2 built cop isn’t intimidating enough, he needs a muscle car to.

You’d figure they would keep them patrolling faster areas too.

Fucking pigs, wasting their time on teenagers with a BB gun instead of something real.

Technically we were breaking the law.

Who gives a fuck you weren’t hurting anyone. They probably were hoping it was drug related. Itching to put another teenager in jail for possession,

He was fair and honest with us.

I’ll give him that.

He gave us the speech about being dumb teenagers and thinking things through and making smart choices and not endangering yourself or others, but he wasn’t patronizing.

You were so damn close. What the hell?

He was about to let us go, he was about to give the gun back, we were about to be off scot-free.

And the bitch rolls up.

Another Charger.

Pig.

She gets out and says to the first guy, the nice guy, “We need to have a little powwow over here.”

Who the fuck says powwow?

They go and talk, I explain what powwow means to AJ, and we wait.

They left you standing there long enough, probably on purpose; they wanted to get in your head or something.

I don’t know it seemed like they were debating the seriousness of the situation.

It was intimidation, cause two Chargers isn’t enough now we need to go have a super serious chat, while you sit here and sweat.

If they did leave us there on purpose then it worked. AJ was getting more anxious by the minute.

See I told you.

He had gotten out of court like three days ago to; it must’ve been terrible for him.

That bitch, just – ugh!

I mean I guess she was doing her job, but she was kind of a bitch,

There is no kind of about it! You went from being sent on your way with a slap on the wrist and a warning to being told you could be charged because of her!

That’s because the law is vague.

Why do you think it’s vague? So they can pull shit like this and harass people. Why is there no legal difference between having an airsoft handgun or a shotgun on public land?

That does seem dumb.

It’s more than dumb. It’s absurd.

She didn’t have to be disrespectful about it.

Don’t even get me started on that.

You don’t have to tell us how utterly stupid we are while you tell us we are potentially being charged with I don’t even know what.

It isn’t enough to waste two cops, two Chargers, on teenagers with a BB gun, you then need to ridicule and harass them.

At least the nice cop stayed nice.

Yeah, while the bitch flipped shit everywhere.

He kept assuring us that he would write the report playing everything down, not that was even anything to play down, so that nothing would come of it.

She still felt the need to ask you how stupid you were every ten seconds.

AJ started to lose it.

He didn’t start to lose it he was about to burst into tears.

He turned 18 a week ago, he had just been in court, and they had taken his home phone number so Sheila was going to find out. I don’t blame him.

He tried to claim it was fake. That he learned how to fake it cause it would stop a Sheila rampage.

It would be useful.

Think about how many times he made sure you knew he was faking.

Too many times.

Exactly.

It was probably a good thing when you think about it.

Oh great, now they think you are both dumb and one of you is a pussy.

No not like that. It forced me to do something. I had to calm him down. I had to talk to the police.

You do speak a little better than AJ does.

If I hadn’t started talking we wouldn’t have known I couldn’t be charged.

That probably should have been one of the first things she said, but instead she treats you like you too could be charged.

We wouldn’t have learned he could just pick the gun up in a few days since he legally owned it.

Oh yeah cause his dad and Sheila are gonna let that happen.

They thought we were skipping school until I started talking to them.

Fine, AJ’s break down had some perks.

Then of course as soon as I get AJ back together and start getting some straight answers the third cop shows up.

Three fucking Chargers. Not one, not two, three! Half of the Barrington Police Force’s Chargers have now been dispatched to handle two high school students with a BB gun. What a load of bull.

Then we just have to wait longer while the first two talk to the third one.

Lord knows what his purpose was. He drives up, gets out, lets them walk over to him, they talk for a few minutes, and he drives away. Seems like a good use of police time.

At least the nice one spoke to us after the other two left.

I don’t care. After your treatment by the bitch the cops are not going to earn back any points in my book today.

It was good of him to assure us that nothing would come of it.

Whatever.

At least they never found the revolver.

That is quite literally the only thing that could have gone worse. You are so damn lucky.

I didn’t mean to hide it I just had it tucked in my belt and I was not feeling very inclined to reveal it.

Of course you have another BB gun tucked in your pants while you and AJ are being detained by three pigs for having a BB gun on public land.

I forgot I had it, and then I didn’t know if it would just make it worse.

Thank God they didn’t try to search you. I wouldn’t have been surprised if they tried.

They let us go though, I was gonna be late for practice but only by a few minutes.

Yeah and then AJ basically fucks you over.

No he didn’t fuck me over. He didn’t help my situation, but I had already dug myself quite a hole.

Really though AJ? You’re mom calls him, is super pissed cause she needs the car and doesn’t know where you are and you won’t answer your phone, so AJ responds by saying, “We were with the police. We are almost back.” and hanging up.

Well he had just gone through exactly what I had, but it was probably 1000 times worse because of his history and parents, not to mention if anyone gets charged it’s him.

He handled that poorly.

Yeah he did.

You almost forgot my favorite part, where you almost pull an AJ.

That was the last straw for me. Pulling out of that blind drive in that industrial lot, cutting off, and almost being rear ended by an EP cruiser was too much.

AJ didn’t exactly help with your mom when you got back either. You were just trying to talk with her and explain, and he just wouldn’t shut up, and she just wasn’t listening anywise.

Well he was nervous and he talks when he’s nervous and there was a lot going on with my mom at the second.

You had just had a run in with the cops and the only support you had through the whole ordeal was AJ, she could’ve thought about how that felt.

She could have, but I didn’t expect her to. She was just a mixed cocktail of angry. My phone was dead, she needed the car, I was supposed to be back an hour ago, she’s late to Aidan’s tennis match, I’m late to practice, and then to top it off her kid was just with the police and she has no idea why or what happened.

She was way to upset about being late. He plays JV doubles and doesn’t even like it.

It doesn’t matter it was just the combination of everything.

AJ just wouldn’t shut up. You are trying to explain and he wont shut up, so she yells at him, which is just the first domino and she turns to you and starts yelling in the middle of the parking lot.

I was prepared for it until I cut off that cop. I had kept my forced calm through the ordeal with the cops, then while talking to AJ on the phone while driving back, and I was ready to keep it up for my mom, but almost getting hit made me break it.

Yeah you just yelled, “Fuck!” and hit the steering wheel a few times as you pulled into the lot great.

I lost my cool though, and because I lost it I had to fight to keep it while talking to my mom.

At least she finally chilled out when you convinced her that talking after was better than yelling now.

I wouldn’t have lasted much longer with the yelling I would’ve lost it.

You did lose is moron.

After she left in an empty locker room, that’s better than in front of her.

Yeah but look at your damn hand. You might as well have punched a cheese grater.

Huh, that’s funny. You can see the diamond patter on my knuckles.

Wonderful.

What do I do now?

Well it can’t get worse.

I guess not, but I can make it better depending on how I handle it.

AJ is outside right now, he’s already telling the story just go with him. You know he’s not going home anytime soon and that sounds like a decent plan for you to.

I have to handle this.

What does that mean?

Go to practice, I’m only 15 minutes late.

Try and move your first two fingers.

Ok, I guess I am going to Connie’s.

You just need ice. You can grab some at home, no one is there and you and AJ can drive around and let things cool off.

It seems like that would be a lot easier than trying to explain this all right now.

Exactly.

That decides it then.

Good, go help AJ finish the story so he doesn’t mess it up to bad, and then hop in the Denali drive.

No. I am going to go to Connie’s, get my hand bandaged up, and go talk to coach.

Why would you do that right now?

It is what I should do. The right choice is always the harder one. I’ll get my hand bandaged up, that way McLaughlin can see why I’m not practicing, and I will give him the bare bones and tell him AJ will fill him in later.

Why AJ?

AJ is his advisee and I’m sure he would be calling or getting a cal from Sheila about this anywise. This way I have enough time to convince AJ to just tell the truth, you can’t lie if cops are involved, and I can coach him on the best way to present things.

Good luck,

Here we go.
