College Writing

A College education is considered an extension of high school education, where the individual is pushed to develop into a more well-rounded member of society. Compared to the limited scope of a high school education, college should be a time of new discoveries and previously unseen educational tactics. My experience in college has, in many ways, broke this conception. In comparison to my experience in Writing Seminar college writing has been an extremely limited representation of the creative process. Through my experience analyzing my own writing experience at Lafayette I am consistently reminded of Ken Robinson’s Ted Talk on the role of creativity in education.

This TED talk has proven true throughout my educational experience in high school as well as college. With the exception of a few classes (including this one) I have never been pushed to expand my work creatively. I am not certain that this assumption can be proven in all majors at Lafayette, but through my experience as a Government and Law major, I have found that not only is creativity not promoted but it is in fact punished. I often find myself limiting the amount of personal opinion I insert into my papers in order to achieve a better grade and avoid the ‘hasty generalizations’ I am constantly accused of making.
