Typeface

After looking around Lafayette’s campus and in the Time Magazine articles, I decided to use a photo of a typeface from a food truck during BaconFest and an image of an exit sign. I choose this food truck’s expressive typeface because I thought it was really interesting in that it doesn’t project a serious or authoritarian messages. Instead, it is playful and in good spirits, most likely the goal of whoever decided to use this unique font. Simply having a fork and a spoon as well as a face within the type is expressive and creates hypermediacy. Interestingly, the neon colors and contrast of colors pulls the attention of the audience in a different way than a black on white formal font.

On the other hand, an exit sign has to be direct and important, for when needed it guides people and in an emergency it can be the difference between making it out of a building or not if you are unaware. The big bold red letters add to the immediacy of the statement written. The exit sign can be categorized as modern because of the clean and simplistic writing, which can be read and easily translatable without hesitation or interpretation.

I believe that I am most drawn to the expressive type since it is out of the ordinary. For example, in class when we were looking at a regular typeface verse the candy cane font, I definitely enjoyed the latter. I know for professional and school work, I would never use that sort of typeface, but for things that can be expressive I find it more intriguing. I enjoy other things that are more expressive too, like art and fashion, so I don’t find it that surprising that I enjoy expressive typeface as well. My interest is sparked by unordinary images and colors, perhaps a trait that has developed from years of typing with Time New Roman for several years in school. However, what I found in class and in the Time Magazine advertisements was sometimes too expressive and used too many different fonts that it just seemed unorganized and unclear. So, even being an expressionists, I still understand the importance and uses of modern and neutral types.
