- Biofuels are considered to be a renewable and sustainable form of energy.
- In order for the US to break their dependence on foreign oil while reducing GHG emissions, biofuels is a sustainable solution for the US.
- However biofuels do create problems by taking away from food productions, water resources, and can harm soil quality due to the increase in need for certain agriculture products to meet the demand for increase in biofuels.
- In terms of policy, recommendations would be made that the US adopt standards for how much biofuel can be produced and what type of biofuel, in order to avoid creating more environmental problems.
- Another recommendation would be to continually increase the amount of biofuels blended into transport fuels and eventually have a certain percentage of cars that will only run on biofuels.
- Biodiesel and cellulosic ethanol, should be increased in production and usage without expanding agriculture in the US.
- Increasing usage of biofuels in the US while not expanding agriculture will reduce GHG emissions in the US since biofuels are a much cleaner fuel compared to conventional gasoline.
- More research and investments must be attributed to the development of “2nd Generation” biofuels to prevent competition between food and biofuels for crops.
- However it cannot be recommended that biofuels become the only source of transportation fuel in the US because of biofuels cannot meet the sole energy demand for transportation in the US and the same recommendation would be made for global biofuel production.
