With next to no time to shoot b-roll because I had a one hour window with her before she left to screen her film in Pittsburgh, I decided as b-roll I would use archival footage of Hebron, the city where her documentary takes place. Also, the export of this cut removed the sound from the beginning (I think I had one of the audio layers on mute). Let me know your thoughts otherwise, thanks.
Hey Laura!
First of all – how did you get her to interview with you!?! This is amazing!
As for the cut itself, I think you need to think of a central theme or idea you would like viewers to take away. Right now, it seems the interview wants to touch on multiple points, but is not very telling as the edits jump from one idea to the next. Because you filmed such a long interview, I would say try re-watching it and note anything repeated, emphasized, or important.
She says a lot of great information I think now it is all about stringing it together which you began doing with the text you implemented. Make all your edits intentional and telling! Other than that, your sound is great, framing is great, and you have a great subject!
For B-roll, it would be cool to see images from her film or even images of what she is discussing. You could potentially ask her for permission, or as you said, use archival footage.
Looks great, Laura! Keep it up!
wow this is a great interview! I thought it was really well strung together, but i agree that b-roll is needed to break it up, and i love your idea about getting images from her film. When trying to cut it down, maybe listen to the whole interview and target one string of thought that she had and pull interesting segements from that. Once it’s cut down, I think this is going to be a great interview!
