Rough Cut Interview

My process narrowing down an interview subject has been difficult. I originally got in contact with Sweet Girlz Bakery to interview them about their business and their delicious cupcakes, but they ended up calling for a raincheck on our interview. I was scrambling for someone to interview when my sorority’s Philanthropy Chair came to mind. Philanthropy and community service are not often mentioned when the typical stereotype of sororities or fraternities are portrayed in media. Sororities and fraternities might have a negative connotation in today’s society because of the unfavorable media towards them, but the goal of my interview with Olivia was to focus on the positives and shine a light onto Greek organizations.

This is a very, very rough cut. I would like to get more shots of B-roll at philanthropic events and of the girls in the chapter. Adding music and fixing the text on the film is also a must in the next editing process.

  1. I enjoyed watching your interview and like you said it’s a very rough cut. The sound was extremely low. I was listening to this on my laptop, no earphones, full volume and it seemed low to me. Also, I would connect the topics she talks about more smoothly. She seems to jump from topic to topic without much of a transition. Like you mentioned, I would get b roll of them volunteering at 3rd street alliance. The beginning is also a bit rapid. I would make the fade in transition longer. I like the shot of her throughout the interview and I would see how it would look a bit more zoomed in.

  2. Hey Natalie, I enjoyed watching your rough cut and look forward to seeing the changes you make for the final. Here’s what worked well: I think you were able to get your subject to speak in detail about her experience in a sorority. She gives specific examples (especially about literacy day and working with the kids) which serve as nice stories within the context of the piece. In terms of what could be worked on for next time, I definitely think using more b-roll and using it throughout the whole film will be more engaging. Using more b-roll will also be helpful when editing the transitions so there aren’t as many jump cuts. In addition, I think it may be helpful to think about the arc of the story. Would it be better to start with why she’s in a sorority and then move into the community service aspect? Whatever you decide, I think it’ll be good to use all of the literacy day interview footage together so she’s not jumping from topic to topic. Excited to see your final.
