  1. Loved the interview.
    Here’s what worked:
Your subject was clearly passionate about his involvement in the football program.

I loved the temporal progression of events in the video. It was great to hear about his journey, starting in high school and spanning his entire football career up until the present.

Your B-Roll, especially in the beginning, was rich in both audio and visual detail.

    What didn’t work as well:
I encourage you to try other transitions/methods of cutting. See what your other comment is, but I personally am not a fan of cross dissolves. In my mind you have two solutions. 1.) cut back and forth between interview and B-Roll. This will eliminate your subjects face teleporting around the frame as you cut and he changes his position. 2.) just cut without transitions. Its a little bit more raw and jarring, but over using the cross-dissolve is an imperfect solution your editing problem.

I assume you don’t have more B-Roll because what you do have is very high quality. The cut at the end to B-Roll is problematic because your audio changes, so you can fix that your interview will have a stronger finish. In general, I just wanted to see less talking from your subject, and have his audio overlaid more B-Roll. Obviously, it may be impossible to shoot more B-Roll at this point, but if you can show up to practice one day with a camera… you’ll have a really awesome final cut on monday!!

TLDR: go shoot some B-Roll of practice, and then use B-Roll to alleviate the need to cut from interview shot to interview shot. Instead, always throw a piece of B-Roll in between shots of your interview. Obviously, overlay interview audio over your B-Roll.

  2. Grace,
I absolutely loved your usage of B-roll!! I think overall technically the film was shot well; good lighting and exposure, good sound quality, etc. The one thing that I would bring up is that it was a bit wordy, similar to the documentary we watched in class on Peru. I loved what he was saying, but I felt like it was rather lengthy and him just talking about football for a long time. I think you could cut up the interview and have some shots of him actually playing in the game, using audio from the game, like fans cheering or shouting his name, or his coach yelling at calls. Even a whistle blowing would be nice. Perhaps bringing up footage from his as a younger football player in high school or him with his family when he talks about the scholarship??

The editing was pretty smooth, the one thing I would just say is that the end seemed a bit random and it was clear he was cut off in his sentence. I know he mentions that he was just a walk on player without a scholarship, so maybe bringing that closer to the end about the scholarship story so that the transition is more coherent would be great. Overall, good filming skills and I think this is going to turn out really well!
