Elective Period

The past few weeks have been nothing but hectic! We have been sending tech clinic members all days of the work week to help facilitate and oversee the 5th block elective period at Bangor Area High School. The students have…

Fall Semester Kick-off Event

Almost all of my plants are starting to produce, and the butternut squash will be harvestable in about two weeks time! This is perfect seeing as Lafayette’s dining services allows Technology Clinic to refrigerate food in the Dining Halls. This…

From Farm to Table

Yesterday I spent my morning helping the other Tech Clinic group harvest and gather cucumbers, squash, beats, carrots, and kale (to name a few). These were later distributed at the Pine street community garden where local residents could take whatever…

Long Overdue Update

Since the last post, I’ve gained a lot of useful experience volunteering at Lafayette College’s community garden where I also maintain a 20×40′ plot of watermelon, squash, cucumber, vertical bush beans, and cabbage to name a few. Here are some…

Weeding and Tilling: Starting a Garden

Many seedlings had grown rapidly in the greenhouse. Their extensive root systems required much more growing space, so I visited LaFarm  to prepare a 20×40 plot. The weather was sunny in warm: perfect weather for weeding and tilling. My first…

Transplanting, Donations, & Future Plans

I’ve had almost 100% germination and had to rapidly transplant the watermelon, cucumber, nasturtium, and bush bean seeds because their roots were extending beyond the confines of their respective cells. I’ll be visiting LaFarm, Lafayette’s community garden, to help weed…

Seedlings and Spring Cleaning

Yesterday, I met with Bridgett Pruett, the executive Director of the Slater Family Network, to discuss possible Bucket Garden giveaways for Families in need. For those who don’t know, Slater Family Network is non-profit family center. I also began a new batch of seedlings (over 17 trays with over 1,000 individual cells) with the help of the Veggie-Van Tech Clinic team.  I’ve started seedlings of tomatoes, watermelon and pumpkins that will require outdoors growing space. I intend to test the soil around the greenhouse and build raised beds. Hopefully this will develop into a 40×40 growing plot that teachers and students can use; however, I’m getting a little ahead of myself. Anyways, here’s a rough video tour of the greenhouse. I intend to start Hydroponics soon along as well add additional soil beds. Keep in mind the second half of the greenhouse is currently under construction.
