Library Final Project

For my final project in the library I really want to make something that juxtaposes the way that the library is normally used for and perhaps uses books in unconventional ways. I really want to make something that is hard to ignore and captures the audiences’ attention. I have a couple ideas that I am currently thinking about.

  1. One of my ideas is to convert one of the study rooms (most likely in the basement since it is all walls) into an almost like hands on art room type thing. I would have the walls covered in either white paper or book pages that people could then paint on or draw on during their study breaks. I would want this room to be able to be used creatively and act as a contrast to all the work and assignments people are usually focused on in the library.
  2. Another idea that I have is to cover the main stairs that are leading up to the second floor with colorful book pages and then write a quote from a famous book on the steps to emphasize how much value we put on books, and just books in general.                     I chose this quote because it is from a really famous book: Ulysses and the quote is about aging and just felt really fitting for college students who are trying to figure out what they want to do, etc.
  3. Another idea is to make paper mâché sculptures out of book pages that are in the shape of people sitting and reading and then I would play them around the library sitting in chairs and on couches and at computers, etc.
  4. A fourth idea that I have is to create a giant collage out of book pages, maybe a picture of Skillman library that would then hang from the ceiling or of Lafayette College or of famous authors.

I am not quite sure which idea I like best but I think I am leaning towards one or two.

Copyright: Bound By Law

I found this book to be very fascinating because I was aware that copyright is a big thing in movies and art, however I was not aware of how extensive of an issue it was.  In addition, it surprised me how much copyright and its prominence have changed over the last 25 years. I did appreciate the fact that it was a comic book because it made a somewhat dense subject more enjoyable to read.  I was also surprised by what enables something to be considered “public domain” and after how many years does something become free for use. I understand why copyrights are often necessary and important to the creators, however it does seem as though they make things very difficult for most people to produce works of art. I appreciated the examples that were given in the comic book as well. It was also interesting to learn about fair use and the way things can be over used.

Performance Art Projects

For my project, one issue I am having is since I want to incorporate paint somewhere public on campus, I am wondering if there will be a big hassle for cleanup and if I should plan on bringing a tarp incase it gets a bit messy. I feel as though since I want to use right in front of the Fairnon steps as my performance location I feel as though its peak busy times would be the best time to perform my piece. I am not sure if 11:50-12:30 or 5:50-6:45 would be the best time to get the most people to engage with my performance. Another issue is whether or not it is more successful for the class to see my piece live and see people putting paint on me or if it is enough just with video/photo documentation and then bringing the work of art itself into class. These are some of the things I am currently thinking about right now regarding my piece.  As for the audience I want people who are walking by Fairnon and then I will definitely ask people in different club and class groupchats to come as well and help me out and engage with my work.

Performance Art Idea

I am not exactly sure what I want to do for my performance piece however I am really inspired by Marina Abramović’s work and how much she engages with the audience. Since doing my site-specific piece and really getting out of my comfort zone I feel a lot more comfortable and excited about doing something that relies on others to make the performance work. I am really intrigued by the idea of using the library or front of the library for my location of my piece. I feel as though this is a major hub for a lot of students and it is very academics focused.

Artist Research – Performance Art

For my artist research, the artist I chose to further research was Marina Abramović. Marina is a Yugoslav artist best known for her performance pieces. When I saw her name come up I did not realize that I had actually been shown one of her works in capstone, her work just caught my eye. However, as I continued to research her, I came across Rhythm 0 which I had heard of before. This was a piece where Marina stood before an audience for six hours and allowed the audience to do whatever they pleased. She had a table full of objects, 72 to be exact, even a loaded gun. The purpose of her work was to see how far people would go with this. Marina found this piece to be much more challenging than she had anticipated and that what the audience did to her was grueling. “What I learned was that … if you leave it up to the audience, they can kill you … I felt really violated: they cut up my clothes, stuck rose thorns in my stomach, one person aimed the gun at my head, and another took it away. It created an aggressive atmosphere. After exactly 6 hours, as planned, I stood up and started walking toward the audience. Everyone ran away, to escape an actual confrontation.”. She experienced a lot during this piece. I found it very fascinating and impressive that she put so much trust into these people and endured all of this treatment for six full hours. I think it also says a lot about our society that once she started walking away everyone ran in fear of facing her.

Site-Specific Art

Site-specific art, is art that is created solely for that location. The artist creates the piece with the location in mind. Often the point of site-specific art is to create something that interacts with its surroundings, and really elevates the space that it is in. The idea of site-specific art is that if one were to remove the art from its location and move it elsewhere, it would lose its meaning. Artist Robert Irwin was one of the first artists to promote the term site-specific art. Some examples of art specific works are Condensation Cube by Hans Haacke, and The Gates by Christo and Jeanne-Claude.

Cultural Appropriation

The article I was assigned, “Censorship, Not the Painting, Must Go: On Dana Schutz’s Image of Emmett Till”, was written by Coco Fusco, an artist, writer, and Andrew Banks Chair in Art at the University of Florida. Fusco had a lot to say regarding Dana Schutz’s painting of Emmitt Till and Hannah Black’s letter regarding this painting. Overall, Coco Fusco believes that while not Schutz’s greatest work of art, her painting of Till still contains value, and that this painting, and controversial art in general should not be censored or destroyed. In this article, Fusco first addresses the protests that were associated with Schutz’ painting. While she does not feel like the painting was entirely wrong, she does commend the protestors and agrees that they have valid reasoning for protesting the work. As she continues, she begins to analyze Hannah Black’s letter regarding Schutz’ depiction and use of Emmett Till as subject matter. There are many aspects of Black’s letter that Fusco feels strongly against. For one, she feels as though Black claims that white people could never understand black pain and that the only reason a white artist would then paint something like that would be for their own profit. Fusco goes on to eventually address the fact that while obviously not all white artists who have used black suffering have used it for good, however there are many artists who have used black suffering for anti-racist art, and that many of these white artists were even commissioned for the Civil Rights movement. Fusco explains how she finds Black’s letter unacceptable, and she emphasizes the fact that Black uses “problematic notions of cultural property and imputes malicious intent in a totalizing manner to cultural producers and consumers on the basis of race”. While Hannah Black makes these claims, Coco Fusco brings light to the fact that makes a point that claiming that an artist’s non-mass produced, single painting is on the same level as advertising campaign and Hollywood blockbuster is unjust. And that Black falsely assumed the ability to speak on behalf of all black people. Fusco addresses many points that Black brings up and is able to refute many of them. She finds many faults with Black’s letter, especially the fact that Fusco feels that is hypocritical because Black speaks on a culture that use to keep black British people, such as herself, out of being able to talk on black American experience. In addition, Fusco also reminds the readers that Hannah Black does not address many major points, such as the fact that black artists have also used black suffering for social capital and commercial gain. Fusco continues her article by bringing up some of her own views of the subject matter, and by emphasizing the fact that she believes that black artists are not taught to be able to properly represent/discuss race correctly. Fusco explains that “while elite art schools deploy tokenist inclusion strategies to create the impression of diversity, they actively avoid revising curricula and discourses of critique; the end result is that they produce artists and curators who lack formal opportunities to engage with critical race discourses and histories of anti-racist cultural production”. Fusco claims that without proper discussion it just leads to rage. Another point of Hannah Black’s that Fusco debunks is that how while Black claims that Till’s mother only wanted black people to see the photos, that was not the case at all, and that Mamie Till wants the world to see Emmett’s photo. Fusco emphasizes the fact that while Hannah Black believes that white artists should address white guilt, even artists who have done exactly that were still subject to protests and that one artist in particular who received complaints for his use of subject matter sold his work of art, whereas Dana Schutz promised to never sell her painting fo Emmitt Till. Fusco brings this point up many times throughout her article that Schutz has pledged to never sell her painting, therefore she will never profit off of this painting. Towards the end of the article, Fusco addresses the critics claiming that it was unacceptable for Dana Schutz to represent suffering and Emmett Till in an abstract form and that it should only ever be done in realism. She feels adamant that abstraction is an artistic language, and that it in fact evokes greater emotions for subject matter because one must truly process what is being depicted. Fusco feels so strongly against censoring and destroying difficult to look at art. She emphasizes the ideas that these types of works are important because they bring light to problems that our country are facing especially given the current state of our country. Fusco makes the argument that the fact that Schutz even painted Emmett Till shows the success of Black Lives Matter, and of their bringing up the awareness of patterns of state violence. Fusco believes that the critics and complaints that Hanna Black and others have are unjust.

Artist Presentation – Chairs

I first turned to ARTstor and Oxford Art to research chairs because it was a helpful way to look at chairs in a more artistic way. It allowed me to search for works of art that included the use of chairs in it, or actually chairs themselves. ARTstor and Oxford Art were really beneficial to use because it enabled me to easily narrow my topic, while still having access to so many different examples of “chairs” in history.

I started rather broadly just typing in “chairs”, however, as I started finding specific topics that interested me such as “chairs painting” and “chairs photograph” I was then able to narrow my research. As I continued to find more photographs that I liked within those topics, I was able to continue narrowing my research until I found a chair/designer that really interested me.

Wikipedia and googling images are not the best way to begin researching because there is so much information that is on there that too many topics may come up when first searching for something. They may make narrowing the research more difficult, and in addition, will provide search results for all types of chairs not just in the art sense. Wikipedia also may not always have accurate information, which can then be misleading.

We analyze how artists incorporate research into their topics by studying their works and seeing what types of things inspired their work. Discovering whether or not someone else’s work or something else influenced an artist’s work can allow us to better understand their research process and how they went about incorporating it into their practice. In addition, if artists are often changing/adding to they work, that can also provide clues as to how they use research in their practice.
