I decided to post two “fake advertisements” I did based on two totally different advertisements.  Without the information that these pictures are “lying”, most people did not recognize that they are appropriated. When showing the four pictures together, my friend comments that the first two look more real and convincible even after she knows that the other two are the original ones.

I think this effect is very interesting concerns with my choice of products and the spokesperson. The poses are also related as people always refer perfume to a woman who can give a softer figure to the public. Another interesting comment on these advertisements is about the relationship between Jennifer Aniston and Brad Pitt. This background information gives a sense of sarcasm and humor to the pictures at the same time.

I decided to post this photo of my friend to social media. I thought because we have a lot of friends in common that we would be able to get more of a response. A lot of our friends were confused by the topic and wondered why she was hanging upside down. Some thought that she was right side up at first and didn’t realize that it was a complete lie until further examination. I got a few questions on why her face looked distorted before they realized that she was upside down. Overall I got a lot of good responses along with some confusion but it was a successful post!

I posted the photo I took of toy soldiers to the social media. One of my friends commented that the photo showed the war scene, and she asked if it was the day of commemoration of a war. It is surprising to hear that because the truth is quite different from what the photograph tells. Since I played with the scale of the objects, and took the picture from a low angle, the soldiers are seen to be much larger. Also, some people mentioned the black and white color of this photo and they said it was an old picture of a war or from a film. However, some people exposed my trick, and they thought the soldiers were not real but models or sculptures. After posting this lying photograph, I also posted the picture that shows the real scene. The second photo shows a row of tiny toy soldiers by the window. This time people were surprised at the toys’ tiny scale, and some thought that they were fooled. So from this lying photo, I found it interesting to see things from a different angle and take photographs of them

I posted a picture I took for the “Photographs that Lie” assignment on my Instagram. I use Instagram pretty frequently and felt the photograph was already in-line with a lot of content I typically post. The picture – a photo of my friend Nirupa staring forlornly out of a window, acknowledging the camera – felt like a modern retelling of Rapunzel so I captioned it “Let down your hair.” None of the comments seemed to recognize it was for a photo assignment. One friend commented that she liked the shot, another just commented “lol” and Nirupa aptly replied “or my keys.” It was interesting to see that a staged photograph was accepted as a normal, standard post of mine by most of my friends. I think it would have garnered a different response on Facebook, where it would reach a wider audience. However, it’s pretty standard for people to share art and photos on Instagram in addition to personal photographs so I can see how the lines between a staged and candid photo could blur on Instagram.

So I decided to post the picture of the husky dog I took to Facebook. I felt like it was a picture that would get enough response from my family and friends. They know I love photography so putting this up wouldn’t seem too out of the ordinary. The types of responses I got were all positive and lots of questions. People were asking me if I got this close to a werewolf or wild dog! They were asking me if it was a fake dog!  Or if I got it off the internet. I definitely think this was a good choice because it was a clear example of the ambiguity that is involved in photography.  If I had posted a different picture of this dog next to a person or such you would clearly see his collar or true size and realize that it was a dog not a wolf of such. Overall I enjoyed the compliments on my photography but also believed it to be a valuable lesson of the types of things we see on social media.

I post the beach one on the weibo that is a Chinese social media like twitter. Majority people know the photo is not real. A few question the photo is true and comment, “Oh my god, is that you, why you become so dark”. Some people say that your photography skill is bad. Someone ask me why I post this photo because I hardly post things on social media. Another person comments that I think you have already started the new semester and why you post a photo not yours. I just reply that it is my assignment to see what response I will receive. “I don’t want to be a laboratory mouse with a sad emoji,” the person responds. I deem that the photo I posted is obviously untrue so it is unexpected that some people believe this photo and think my skin become dark. Maybe they consider I take this photo under the beach umbrella or in the grey shadows. This is an interesting experiment although I receive negative comment like bad photography. I will try my best to improve my photography skill.
