K.Hannigan – Final Project

This project was certainly a challenge for me. I knew I wanted to connect nature and the body. There were definitely multiple ways I could go about that. I always take long drives by rivers and I found the perfect backdrop for a nature scene. These train tracks are old and rusty and rarely used. I wanted to create a dream like scenario where a girl and the train tracks were one. This video performance entails a girl walking on the train tracks, the sound played along matches up with how she disappears. This creates a very anxious and emotional feeling, one that really can’t be described. The performance really can’t be explained and how you view it really decides what you get out of it.

Citizen Journalism

For this project, I was at a loss for ideas. I did not have much time to develop my idea as I was not in class on Monday. However, I knew I wanted to create a scene of news worthy material that was realistic at a college. I wasn’t sure how to accomplish this right away. I knew I wasn’t going to be able to accomplish it alone. I gathered some friends together to have them act out a fight. I was trying to capture a college fight in the scene. As we tried and tried nothing seemed to be looking realistic. I didn’t have the best actors I guess. As time moved on an idea came to me.

This was an earthquake in Easton, PA. While an earthquake may not happen here at all, I wanted to make it feel as though students were going crazy because they had no idea what was happen. This project was difficult because capturing the feelings realistically was harder than I imagined.  In the end, I think it turned out pretty realistic for the small amount of footage I had. Doing this project made me realize that this can occur at other schools and could be very scary.

I was also unable to upload but we can view it on dropbox in class.

How the World Uses Water

For this project I wanted to creative a narrative without using any text. I knew for this project to be successful I would have to be a very clear and thoughtful piece. I thought of sounds that are very well know and can impact an audience. My first idea was the sound of water. Water impacts individuals all over the world in many different ways. Water is a necessity; however, some still view it as a luxury. The main message I wanted to get across in this piece is how the world uses water, some overuse and some underuse. It is important to remember how important water is on this earth, and if its overuse continues later generations will be left nothing.

Personally, I feel I was able to get across the many different uses of water in this piece. I was very difficult to be sure the message was being conveyed. I wanted to variety of use to be understood. But, I also wanted there to be an awareness of the anticipation the piece has in the end that leads to ultimately no sound of water. This ending means more than just and ending to a piece it represents the ending of the water supply. As the author, of this piece, I have been made aware of how I use water and this importance of doing little actions like turning off the water while brushing my teeth. The water supply of the earth diminishing is a true concern. My hope as the author is for people to understand what this piece was meant to do, raise awareness.

From posting this piece on social media, I hope this public has a realization while listening. This piece may be hard to understand at first, but I want the audience to realize this piece is not supposed to be calm water sounds for relaxation. This piece is truly about the experience of listening. I listed this piece as ambient genre to hopefully get more feedback in the future. So far I have received little feedback on Soundcloud, with 1 like and 2 plays.  On Soundcloud I do not have followers, it is more a public forum, so the likes are coming from listing the piece in a genre. I hope to continue to get more feedback on this piece, and i wish for the audience to understand the message conveyed by “How the World Uses Water”.

at the train station

I really enjoyed creating my idea for this project and the execution. One day when I was driving back to campus I saw an old train station covered with murals. The murals show old fashioned figures waiting for the train. I wanted to recreate the murals with people standing in front of them. In this project, my friends are performing as the murals show and interacting with the people in the murals. The project as a whole is my friends performing waiting for the train and seeing the train arriving, without actually seeing the train at all.

On social media, this project got very little feedback. On Facebook, the series got some likes but not a normal amount. None of the pictures show me, and many of my Facebook friends may not know the models, discouraging them from commenting or liking. On Instagram, I posted the first photo in the series. This photo got many likes but not as many as normal also. My social media accounts normally depict what I do in my daily life, and these photos do not depict that. My audience may have seen the photos as out of place or unusual. My social media accounts are also private so no outside viewers were able to see the content. But overall, I do not think the lack of feedback speaks to the meaning behind the photos.
