Welcome

Headshot - Jason SimmsI am the Instructional Technologist for Lafayette College in Easton, PA. In this role, I work with faculty, staff, and students on a variety of projects, helping to integrate technology into all aspects of teaching, research, and scholarship.  My educational background and interests facilitate working with a variety of interdisciplinary stakeholders, from humanities to STEAM; I earned a B.A. in Classics, an M.A. in Anthropology, an M.P.H. in Environmental Health, and a Ph.D. in Applied Anthropology, in addition to a graduate certificate in Geographical Information Systems (GIS). My broad interests within academic computing include data science and visualization, facilitating and energizing interdisciplinary collaboration on teaching and projects, geospatial projects, digital humanities, and more.

My philosophy of instructional technology support revolves around two key tenets: Stop Saying “Yes” and Stop Saying “No”.

One of my primary responsibilities is being the primary front-end Moodle contact for campus, working on a range of issues including providing individual assistance with course design, creating documentation, offering workshops, and conducting functionality testing. Beyond this, I am involved in a number of projects, such as:

  • leading the GIS Working Group
  • serving on the Open Educational Resources (OER) Steering Committee
  • developing strategic plans for campus high-performance computing (HPC) capabilities
  • reviewing Office 365 for potential campus-wide adoption
  • evaluating streaming media solutions for campus and the LMS
  • participating in the ePortfolio working group
  • serving on the Teagle Grant steering committee, as part of LVAIC
  • providing solutions for energy and environmental monitoring for campus and the surrounding area
  • collaborating on the design of the Data Visualization Center
