Lafayette College has taken great “LEAP”s into a more sustainable campus over the past few years.

The student environmental club, Lafayette Environmental Awareness and Protection (LEAP), has been actively working to make the campus more environmentally friendly in many ways. This includes working to make our recycling program more efficient, proposing renewable energy possibilties, creating children’s environmental education programs, planning environmentally-conscious events, creating a food-waste composting program, and now an organic community garden.

Other green organizations include the Society of Environmental Engineers and Scientists (SEES), which has projects including perchlorate remediation, nitrogen cycling research, and green roof design as well as composting and gardening. Engineers without Borders (EWB) work to meet the needs of developing communities.

Lafayette also has a “Sustainability Committee” consisting of students, faculty, and administration.

The First-year student orientation in Fall 2008 was themed “Live Green Lafayette” and consisted of reading Michael Pollan’s book, the Omnivore’s Dilemma. Students Dan Goldberg, Mickey Adelman, Daniella Colon, and Jenn Bell also gave the convocation speeches and there was a “Zero-waste” picnic.  This was also the time of the infamous “Corn on the Quad” project.
