DKE is honored to recognize two brothers who have been working diligently to establish their own companies prior to graduation. Michael Sainsbury ’12 has been developing an internet communications company that aims to bring fast, affordable wireless internet and voice services to his native country of Zimbabwe through a mobile device platform. The company seeks to purchase wholesale bandwidth from existing Internet companies and repackage it into wireless packages that can then be accessed from a compatible mobile device at a much lower cost than current companies provide.

More locally, Samuel Schulsinger ’12 is in the process of starting his sophisticated snack food company here at Lafayette, which he hopes to grow organically in the area and eventually expand throughout the region. The company’s goal is to provide healthy alternatives to common snack foods without sacrificing flavor. The snacks consist of a variety of ethnic flavors, including Caribbean seasoned plantain chips.

DKE Rho is proud to be comprised of such innovative and entrepreneurial men.

On Thursday, April 26, Dr. Tim Silvestri, the Assistant Director of Counseling Services, was invited to the DKE house to discuss responsible drinking habits and the social psychology behind drinking. Dr. Silvestri questioned the brotherhood on how they feel about the stages of drunkenness, from safe social drinking all the way to dangerous levels of intoxication. At the conclusion of the talk, Dr. Silvestri handed out “green cards” to the brotherhood, enabling them to see how many drinks it takes to reach the danger zone in a certain time. Overall, the DKE brothers left the talk with a new “psychological” mindset on drinking, knowledge that will be extremely beneficial throughout college and into the future.

The Rho Chapter of Delta Kappa Epsilon continued its tradition of charity, April 14th when Lafayette Dekes, accompanied by numerous alumni and campus support, coordinated the 4th Annual Jeremy Saxe Memorial Basketball Tournament. This charity sporting event has served two purposes since its inception in 2009: to honor the life of Brother Jeremy Saxe who passed away during his senior year due to an undiagnosed heart condition, and to raise money for the Jeremy Saxe Foundation as it builds a school in Nepal.

Brother Saxe

The Saxe Foundation honors Jeremy who, prior to his death in 2008, had recently returned to Lafayette after four months in Nepal for his senior year as a philosophy major with a 3.84 overall GPA. Jeremy was profoundly moved by his experiences in Nepal. He was distressed about the poor educational opportunities of the Nepali children and was particularly torn up about the school that his homestay “sister,” Manisha, attended in Pharping, Nepal. It disturbed Jeremy that she would never reach her goal of becoming a nurse if her formative education continued to consist of a minimal curriculum which at best taught basic memorization of facts for tests. It is for this reason that the Saxe Foundation decided to focus its efforts on improving education opportunities in Nepal.

The Tournament featured a bevy of teams from all across campus competing in the 3-on-3 basketball. Players were able to choose to compete in either a competitive or recreational bracket, encouraging students who aren’t as skilled to join in. The bleachers were filled with fans that came to support their friends, leading to the jovial and merry environment that filled the gym for the whole afternoon. Eventually, three DKE Brothers, Rob Howe, Sam Schulsinger and Michael McCulloch took home the tournament title. We would like to thank everyone who came out to tournament for your continued support, and we look forward to continuing this tradition of honor and charity next year.

The Tournament Champions!

On Thursday April 14, 2012, the Brothers of Delta Kappa Epsilon at Lafayette College held their annual faculty reception. The faculty reception, which was held at the DKE house, is an important element of DKE’s outreach to the Lafayette campus community. By inviting professors, administrators and other member of Lafayette’s exquisite personnel to our home we are able to build bonds that extend past the classroom.

The turnout at the reception was stellar, to say the least. Dozens of professors came out to enjoy hors d’oeuvres and the company of their favorite DKE students. During the reception conversations between Brothers and Professors were ample and diverse, with topics ranging from the Supreme Court, Joe Biden’s upcoming visit and popular television programs. The faculty reception gave brothers an opportunity to exhibit their “Jolly Good Fellow” side, as opposed to the scholarly attitude professors have become accustomed to from DKE brothers in the classroom.

The entire Rho DKE brotherhood would like to extend our utmost gratitude to Lafayette’s tremendous faculty for their continued and unwavering willingness to engage, socially and academically, with our storied Fraternity.
